ABOUT US

Haupt Juwelen, a jewellery manufacturing business begun in 2011, by a South African designer with a passion to create exquisite and memorable pieces. Kurt Haupt set his sights on building a fine jewellery brand that will express the refined techniques of jewellery manufacturing in every piece, akin to those of existing luxury brands. Haupt Juwelen in German stands for “main/leading jewellery”, with this clear directive, the brand endeavours to offer something profound to every client, through quality that is of the utmost standard and design that will be revered for years to come.

The Designer

From a deep found urge to create, impressional pieces. I found myself sketching, carving, forging ultimately utilizing any technique possible to try and materialise the ideas and thoughts teeming inside my mind. This endeavour to create something special lead me to the art of jewellery manufacturing. This art in its entirety, reveals a very special attribute, jewellery is enjoyed by both the designer, as well as by the wearer. A meticulously designed piece of fine jewellery, always finds itself part of many outfits, fit for many occasions and will be cherished by generations.

DESIGN STUDIO

The culmination of concepts, colours and desires converge in the design process to reveal something unique. No design process is alike, every Haupt Juwelen bespoke piece of fine jewellery begins as a concept, that is traditionally sketched, incorporating motifs derived from the design rationale, that is set out according to the client's preferences. A well-designed jewellery piece boasts both its balance of artistic exuberance and wearability.

CAD DESIGNING

The use of CAD designing software opens a multitude of manufacturing techniques previously impossible, such as a seamless jewellery piece. Traditional hand-manufacturing techniques are now paired with modern manufacturing methods, -even by the most historical jewellery houses- all because it utilizes the best of both worlds, improved material quality and accuracy in design. At Haupt Juwelen we use a series of manufacturing techniques, selected according to the commissioned piece.

WORKSHOP

In the workshop, jewellery is manufactured utilizing a combination of ancient techniques that have been used for thousands of years and combining them with modern manufacturing processes. A bespoke Haupt Juwelen piece is conceptualized in the design studio but only reveals itself through the artisan's careful selection and application of a series of techniques to form the envisaged piece.

The lost-wax casting process dates back to 3500B.C. and has been refined with the advent of new technologies, but the fundamental process remains the same. This casting technique paired with Computer-Aided Design and 3D Printing broadens the horizon for more elaborate jewellery pieces. Every jewellery item is then hand-finished, and once the item's precious gemstones are set in place, the article is polished by hand until it reveals the intended character and beauty envisioned by the designer.

DIAMOND SETTING

Traditional diamond setting is the method whereby gemstones are set in place with the use of the surrounding metal from the jewellery mount. Different styles of setting techniques are considered during the design phase, to best suit the article and also as to how well it lends itself to the vibrance of the main gemstones.
